YouTube’s family-friendly Kids app is now available on smart TVs
YouTube’s family-friendly Kids app is now available on smart TVs
YouTube Kids is something of a godsend for parents.
It’s a curated version of the video streaming app that focuses strictly
on content that’s appropriate for young viewers. The user interface is
also streamlined for easier exploration of available videos. Now it’s coming to TVs.
Since launching the Kids app two years ago, YouTube says
it has accumulated 30 billion views and draws over 8 million weekly
active viewers. Today, YouTube Kids is launching on smart TVs from LG,
Samsung, and Sony.
- All 2015 - 2017 LG webOS TVs
- 2013 - 2017 Samsung smart TVs (plus Blu-ray players that have Samsung’s app store)
- 2016 and 2017 Sony TVs — not including Android TV models
Oddly, YouTube Kids isn’t ready for Google’s own TV
operating system just yet. The company only says that the app will be
available on Android TV “soon.” As always, YouTube notes that
inappropriate videos can sometimes slip through its automated Kids
screening system unnoticed and encourages parents to flag anything that
seems out of place. Search can also be disabled to lessen the odds of
bad videos popping up.
