Look how small this tiny $400 laptop is! It’s really small!
Computers today are even smaller than ever. But some of
the new, smaller computers are even smaller-er than other smaller
computers. In this case, I’m referring to the GPD Pocket, a crowdfunded laptop that at first glance kind of looks like a toy but apparently is a full Windows 10 computer.
The Pocket is actually the second miniaturized Windows laptop from GPD, after the GPD Win,
which was a more gaming-focused device. It measures 7.1 inches x 4.2
inches, or roughly the footprint of a medium-sized paperback book, with a
7-inch 1080p display. It’s powered off an Intel Atom x7-Z8700 processor
and has 4GB of RAM, which aren’t terrible specs for day-to-day
computing. Ports-wise, you get a USB 3.0, USB-C, HDMI, and 3.5-mm
headphone jack. As an alternative to Windows 10, the Pocket is also
available in a Ubuntu version. And despite the small size, GPD still
claims to get up to 12 hours of battery life off a charge.
Along with the small size is a small price, with the GPD Pocket
available on Indiegogo for $399. As with any crowdfunded project,
there’s always some risk involved in backing, but GPD’s past experience
with the Win should offer some confidence that they may actually meet
the promised June ship date.
